Hand-hewn Basque wine trunk

Sometimes we come across such an unusual piece that we simply must bring it back to our store... yet find it difficult to describe! Such is the case with this antique Spanish wine console that we estimate came into existence in the early 1800s. This unique oak piece caught our attention at an auction in old Brussels. As we explored it, we could see weary travelers and wine enthusiasts of old lingering around this chest just waiting for a sip of the wine stored inside. Solid enough to stand the test of time in a early French chateau (or now in your home!), this piece boasts a handy hinged top that reveals the bounty within -- hand-hewn racks that nestle your best bottles of vino. Over the centuries, delicate sheets of metal leafing have been used in many creative ways in order to add a glint of luxury and prestige to any item. Artists would hammer gold, silver, copper, brass, aluminum, and even platinum until the metal was so thin it could drift away in the wind, and then hand-apply it to statues, paintings, jewelry, and more. In more recent years, Americans discovered that non-toxic leafing could be added to liqueurs and confections in order to convey the idea of great wealth... yet Europeans have been using that technique since the 16th century!

One of our favorite combinations is silver or gold leafing with mirror. The shimmer produced by this romantic coupling evokes the feeling understated elegance, and the sparkle just lights up a room – and any image reflected in the mirror, by the way!

When we found this antique silver-leafed mirror, we had to scoop it up and bring it home for our customers. Its proportions are ample, yet not imposing. Grounded solidly with hard corners on the bottom, the top softens in a flirty, playful arch. There are only eight exclusive Vi-Spring proprietors in the United States, just a few in the Southwest, and only one in Arizona: European Home.

Now, we proudly announce the arrival of a newly-designed line of luxury mattresses from Plymouth, England-based Vi-Spring, a company that has been hand-crafting beds from certified all-natural materials since 1901. Rarely in the 110 years that the company has been in existence has it made such exciting changes to its product offering.

We've personally witnessed Vi-Spring’s stringent requirements for sourcing certified all-natural materials, and the care they take in crafting each bed individually. In addition to the best wool, Vi-Spring also uses resilient premium-quality horsehair (the tail is shaved, and no horses are hurt in the process), and fillings such as cashmere, alpaca, silk and mohair can be found in the top models. The beds can be made to order in any shape and size, and tensions range from soft to extra firm (each side of the bed can be individually specified). This grand, 250-year-old clock could actually be considered somewhat of a youngster -- created 100 years after the pendulum clock was invented in 1656! Hand crafted in the 1740’s, this clock was surely a pricey purchase, as the ornamentation was flaunted as a status symbol for the very wealthy at the time. It wasn’t until the 1800's that clock parts could be mass-produced in factories, making pendulum clocks more affordable for the working class. By the 1930's, the quartz movement had been invented, and pendulum clocks began to lose their appeal.

So, our beauty has truly stood the test of time. Tall and proud, made of fine French walnut in the Louis XIV style, this clock has only gotten better… in fact, it still works!

Our chestnut armoire: A sweet taste of France

In France, the abundant chestnut tree is called Chataignier, and its fruit are called Chataigne or Marrons. Although it is still well over 100 degrees here in the American Southwest, in France there will soon be a crisp chill of autumn in the air… making it perfect weather for Marrons Glaces – candied chestnuts served with brandy and whipped cream.

Strolling through a French forest, you’ll find plenty of chestnut trees. Throughout the centuries, Europeans have depended upon its fruit for survival in times of great need, and have used the hearty wood for furniture. So, finding chestnut furniture in France isn’t much of a surprise.

But, discovering a decorative chestnut piece that was hand-crafted around 1850 definitely qualifies as a remarkable find! We came upon this stately and elegant armoire in Bordeaux, and truly believe that an old piece of this stature and condition is quite a rare and remarkable find.

If you’re looking to add a little French twist into your life, have a go at whipping up Marrons Glaces. Making this indulgent treat is a labor of love that takes days, but the reward is – dare we say – quite sweet. Iron chandeliers: Beauty and the beast

Stop for a minute and think about a humble 17th or 18th century blacksmith toiling away, and what image comes to mind? We think of a strong and stocky craftsman in a heavy apron, with worn hands with dirty fingernails. Sweat drips from his soiled brow as he hammers away at the heated iron, bending and twisting it until it takes the shape of his intended design. Slowly and steadily, as a blazing fire sets the room aglow, the unyielding metal is transformed. As forged techniques were developed, the metal would be melted and poured into clay, sand, or wood molds. This was how iron chandeliers were produced – some decorative with graceful curves, others were designed for a more utilitarian purpose – for the merchant class and nobility of the day. Finished with candles and hung from sturdy chains, the fixtures would rightfully take their place as a room’s primary source of illumination.

We have been fortunate enough to find many of these ancient pieces on our travels through Europe (visit our online gallery of iron chandeliers) to offer to our customers. Choose what appeals to you… there are those with delicate curves, while others make a handsome statement. All have been painstakingly retrofitted for the modern day light bulb. An inspiring deux corps

The Loire Valley in central France is at once remarkable, spectacular and charming. Coveted by England in the Middle Ages, this land was once described as “a queen whom kings have forever loved.” Rich in intellectual and artistic history, it was here that Joan of Arc met with Charles VII. Leonardo da Vinci called one of its stately chateaux home, and others who frequented this hamlet of France include Liszt, Chopin, Balzac, and Delacroix. In fact, the architectural splendor of the area even inspired Charles Perrault to pen his famous fairy tale, Sleeping Beauty.

It was here in this spellbinding land of ancient forests, farmland, vineyards, gardens, and grand architecture that we found our own beauty: A French deux corps, that we estimate was hand-crafted in the 1700s. True to the creativity of the area, furniture makers developed this design as a solution to the challenges associated with installing massive, one-piece cabinets. See the chandelier in a new light!

If you were to travel back to the assembly chambers of medieval times, you would find the dank, dark rooms dimly lit by the earliest known chandeliers - basically iron-spiked wood beams hanging from the ceiling, with candles stuck on them. Rough… but it worked!

As man’s taste in home décor improved (thankfully), only a select few could afford the high price of nighttime illumination, and the modest chandelier became a status symbol as it evolved from wood into iron. When developments in glassmaking allowed for less expensive production techniques, the elegant crystal chandelier was born, providing a truly mesmerizing effect when the glow of the candle’s fire bounced off the highly-refractive glass and scattered throughout the room. By the late 1800's, candles had been replaced with both gas and electricity to light up the night.

Today, we read digital books by the light of compact fluorescents, and shine halogens on our kitchen countertops. There are lights we can tap on, lights that blink on when we walk into a room, and lights we can clap on.

And there’s nothing wrong with that… because now we have the opportunity to see the chandeliers of old in a new light: Atmosphere!

We have an amazing collection of (mostly) French chandeliers from the early 1900s in spectacular condition, and all have been rewired with new sockets and covers. Like their ancient wood-and-candle ancestors, they’ll illuminate the darkest corners… but with a brilliant sparkle that can only come from leaded crystal.

Rolling onto Easy Street

Although on the decline today, coal mining once powered the industrial revolution and post-war economics. Smoking chimney stacks and steel mills were just an every day part of the way people lived, and although the European mines of Belgium and Germany weren’t the world’s top producers, they were once chock full of hard-working laborers who would chip away at the organic sedimentary rock and haul it on sturdy rail carts made from wood and steel.

Fast forward a hundred years, and to this blog entry about an authentic European rail cart that we have right here in our store. We were surprised to find it in such immaculate condition, since it spent its entire life in the mines. He arrived here with a mate, and when that one sold, it took four grown men to load it in into the truck for transport to the lucky buyer. We’ve rescued this tough guy from his hard labor, so life in the 21st century is much easier for this cart. Now, instead of lugging a steel tub of heavy coal, we have entrusted it with a durable piece of glass. Rather than rolling in and out of mines, its wheels have been silenced so that it can quietly stand guard as a coffee/side table in a deserving home or office.

Imagine the conversations you could dig up while sitting around this vintage sentry. You and your family and guests won’t hear him speak, but his story speaks volumes.

Taming wild black cherry: A desk for today

Wild black cherry… one might hear this and think of a tantalizing drink that could quench a deep thirst. But we’re talking about the wild black cherry tree, a species native to the central and eastern United States. Growing up to 80 feet tall, the ripe fruit is dark and bitter, and used to produce wines and jellies. Cough syrup is made from its bark, and -- here’s the best part -- furniture is made from its hearty wood. Nature makes its mark on the grain, boasting splits and knots that reveal its Appalachian character and create a unique stamp on each piece of furniture. But when hand-planed to a smooth finish, the wood begs to be touched.

Nobody knows wild black cherry like the folks at MacKenzie-Dow in West Virginia, and the superb craftsmanship turned out by the men and women who work there is why we carry a select few of their benchmade, solid wood pieces at European Home.

It’s no surprise that it makes our day when we discover a piece of 18th or 19th century furniture to bring home to the states for our customers. But we were equally excited about finding this desk… computer-friendly for 9:00 to 5:00, but ready for dinner after hours. Sustainable, made with centuries-old woodworking techniques, and practical for today’s world. Now that quenches our thirst for a great piece of furniture.

Is it... or isn't it?

We may not have been in this business longer than the cherished antiques we bring to our customers, but... let’s just say we’ve been around the block a time or two, and it doesn’t happen often that a piece stumps us.

We'll never forget that long ride through Languedoc to Perpignan on the Spanish border. It was late and we needed a hotel, and something to quench our thirst. Next day we found this table - which we knew would be there. Why else would we drive so far?

But this table really made us think. This beautiful French piece is solid walnut, made from old timbers by strong hands. It’s so well made that we had to think long and hard about whether it is an antique or a reproduction. In the end, we decided it’s a newer piece after all, but lovingly made with materials that have been aged to perfection.

Almost nine feet long, this table will serve your dining room proudly… or hold its own in a VIP conference room at the office. Either way, one thing is clear: This table may not be hundreds of years old, but it will last for the next few hundred years, for sure.

A classic French beauty...rescued & revealed

We thoroughly enjoy our European treasure hunts, but searching through the warehouses, flea markets, and antique stores of France, Italy, Holland, Belgium, and elsewhere is quite a journey in itself!

It's rare that we happen upon a treasure to bring back to the states to offer to our customers -- these places are all crowded with stuff, many are dusty, things are mismatched and broken, and the pieces are most likely coated with layer upon layer of old paint and varnish.

One has to envision a pearl inside all of the oysters!

Such was the case with this old French oak buffet. Designed and handcrafted in the late 1800's, it was found sitting (quite unloved) in a dark corner, suffering from many years of paint and varnish abuse. So we rescued it, brought it home, and had it gently stripped, revealing its beauty for all to see and enjoy.

Use this buffet for storage, serve up your Thanksgiving meal, store your grandmother's china, or just gaze upon it. This French lady may be old, but she's only gotten better with age.

Ahoy matey! This ship's desk is SEE worthy

Sometimes our best finds aren't from the ancient castles and chateaus that dotted the European countryside, but from what might have been a home-away-from-home for many folks back in the 1800s... a ship!

This elegant walnut desk was designed for use by someone of high rank within the tight quarters of a vessel, and it was no lightweight. Of solid construction and fine lines, its locking hinged top lifts to reveal a writing surface and storage space that held important paperwork on the crew and the ship's load, sailing instructions, logbooks, maps, instruments, and more. We're imagining that the separate secured cabinet below would have been the perfect spot for ship's booty.

It's been almost 200 years since someone last lit a candle and set to work at this desk, pen in hand, inkwell within reach. Was he lulled by the creaking timbers? Did he feel the sway of the ocean waves while contemplating a shipment of spices? Or perhaps he was mapping a plan to circumnavigate an oncoming storm?

We will never know.

On the hunt: Mirrors made from antique iron window frames!

Glancing up from a horse-drawn carriage on the cobblestone street, a traveler may have looked up to spot a gloved hand part the silk curtain in the window above.

Europe's elite used to peek through leaded glass framed in iron. Now it is we who look back at ourselves.

These scarce iron window frames have been salvaged from some of the oldest buildings from Amsterdam to Rome, and have been reinvented into decadent mirrors. Add one to your room for a little mystique... they're even better with one of our antique crystal chandeliers!

On the hunt: OZ refrigerator by Zanussi

There we were in Herelbeke, Belgium, looting a warehouse... the secret police were on our tail, and it was only moments until we were found. But we knew we couldn't leave until we got our hands on the dusty crate in the back. In minutes we had it loaded onto our truck and sped away. Alright, so our adventure wasn't this dramatic... but we just couldn't resist the 1960's spy vibe when telling this story.

This is one of those truly amazing finds! Now, safe and sound in our Scottsdale, Arizona store, this Italian Zanussi refrigerator awaits its next adventure. Designed in 1993 by Robert Pezzetta of the Zanussi Industrial Design Centre, the OZ refrigerator was highly sought after by dealers, exhibitors, museums and consumers and can be seen at the National Museum of Modern Art in Paris.

Put a cool chill on your space. This compact and stylish fridge is perfect for a pool room, an outdoor patio space... what's your fantasy?

Hello friends,

Happy New Year 2010!! We just got a 40 foot container from Europe. There are lots of great antiques and vintage items. Phil & Kay always do a great job of searching out the best pieces. For about a week last October they went through France, Belgium & Holland. It is refreshing to have new inventory to fill up the store. When you have a chance please stop by the store. Hello everybody,

For the first time in our 13 plus years in business, we decided to close for a week this summer, August 3 thru August 8. Much thanks to all of our customers who supported us in this decision. Travis took his family camping and Kay and Phil flew back east to visit relatives. We hope you have had a good summer and found lots of ways to stay cool and escape town. It takes longer for us to drive to our new location in Scottsdale, but the view of the mountains and the wildlife right outside our doors makes it all worthwhile. In addition to a family of roadrunners, we have also been blessed by the company of three quail families. The quail families can make several visits a day to the quail block area where it’s an all-you-can-eat seed buffet. The mother and father are such good parents. While the family is feeding down below, the father is usually sitting on top of a bush keeping guard. Sometimes the whole family hops on the bush where they find seeds to eat on the bush too. The parents are very aggressive in defending the babies. It is quite impressive to see mom or dad chase away a huge male grackle; they don’t let anything get near their babies. The exception to this would be house sparrows, which become smaller than the babies as the babies grow. The babies (or at this point we start calling them teenagers) then chase away the sparrows – they learn well from their parents!

James just installed a chandelier today for one of our customers. He did a great job and was highly recommended. James also works with the Phoenix Lamp Company. New arrivals from French Heritage

This is a new line for our store by a company called French Heritage. They have been producing beautiful furniture for 25 years. This desk is a new item for their company, called the "Architect's Desk." The lines are sleek and modern, in contrast to the graceful curves that can be seen in most of their pieces.

Its companions are the "Architect's File Cabinet" and "Architect's Four Drawer Cabinet."

Another piece is the simple yet elegant bookcase entitled "Directoire Open Bookcase"

Forzano & Son - 55th Anniversary!

I just happened to be in downtown Scottsdale yesterday and decided to stop by Forzano & Son. Everyone was excited because they just got a great write-up in the Scottsdale Republic on Wednesday. They are celebrating 55 years in business! For our relatively young state of Arizona, that is a long time. They are well known for their custom work, using only solid wood. If any of our customers has a custom need that we cannot fulfill, Forzano & Son is always the first place we recommend.
